CLIMBING MAGAZINE MOVES, DOWNSIZES

Skram Media LLC, publisher of Urban Climber, announced on February 27 that their newest acquisition, Climbing Magazine, will be relocated to Boulder, Colorado in April. The restructure also will result in job losses.

On February 27, Skram Media LLC announced the restructure of Climbing Magazine after finalizing its acquisition in early January (see the January 5 NewsWire). The editorial offices of Climbing, Skram publicized, will be moved from Carbondale–their home for two decades–to Boulder, Colorado. The new office will be run by Matt Samet, Climbing‘s Senior Editor, and operational by April. Skram also announced that restructuring will result in job losses.

Primedia, who owned Climbing Magazine from 1999 until two months ago, sold the publication to Skram after losing more than a quarter of the magazine’s subscriber base (Climbing reached its circulation highpoint in 1999 with 52,000 readers; the current circulation is roughly 40,000). Mark Crowther, founder and publisher of Skram, said the downsizing is the result of digital efficiency and the “hard facts to do with how this business has been run.” Crowther is optimistic that Skram’s reorganization will revive Climbing by tapping into the “potential for innovation.”
