John Scurlock is Alpinist’s first Photographer of the Month. Every day he looks up at the peaks and asks himself whether he could fly there now. A longtime pilot and “gentleman” climber, he lives in Concrete, Washington, on the banks of the mighty Skagit River with his wife, Karen Nolan, and their eight cats. Besides scheming flights to the most remote corners of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, he currently is planning a project (with glaciologist Dr. Andrew Fountain of Portland State University) to photograph the glaciers of the Olympics and the mountains of Oregon.

Scurlock’s collection contains approximately 60,000 digital images, which he has taken through the 1/4″ plexiglas canopy of his home-built Van’s RV-6 airplane. He currently shoots with a Canon 400D ten-megapixel digital SLR camera, and he previously used the Canon G2 (four megapixel) and G6 (seven megapixel).

Read “Behind the Veil” in Issue 21 to catch a further glimpse of his Cascades, and visit the Wallpaper Archives to see Scurlock’s photos, among others. Every week this month you’ll find a new downloadable Scurlock image–we promise we saved the best for last.
